► (1905-83) Físico suizo. Fue premio Nobel de Física en 1952, compartido con E. M. Purcell, por el descubrimiento del método de las resonancias nucleares para el estudio del núcleo atómico.

Físico estadounidense nacido en Suiza. Emigró a EE.UU. en 1933 y enseñó en la Universidad de Stanford (1934–71). Trabajó en energía atómica en Los Álamos y en contramedidas de radar en la Universidad de Harvard durante la segunda guerra mundial. En 1954 se convirtió en el primer director general del CERN. Compartió el Premio Nobel de Física de 1952 con Edward Purcell (n. 1912–m. 1997) por la creación del método de resonancia magnética nuclear para medir los campos magnéticos de los núcleos atómicos.
